Frequently asked questions
How does fish identification work?
Take or pick a photo of your fish and Gillscan identifies the species using AI, with a confidence level and likely look-alikes. For best results, capture the whole fish in good light against a plain background.
Why does it ask for my location?
To check local fishing regulations โ size, bag, and season limits vary by exact location. Your GPS coordinates are used only for that lookup and are not used to track you. See our Privacy Policy.
Is the "legal to keep" answer official?
No โ it is advisory only. Regulations change frequently and can vary by water body. Always confirm current rules with the official fish-and-wildlife authority before keeping any catch. See our Terms of Use.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are billed by the Apple App Store or Google Play. Manage or cancel anytime in your store account:
- iPhone/iPad: Settings โ tap your name โ Subscriptions โ Gillscan.
- Android: Play Store โ profile โ Payments & subscriptions โ Subscriptions โ Gillscan.
Canceling stops future renewals; you keep Premium until the current period ends.
What's free vs Premium?
The free tier includes 5 regulation checks per month. Premium unlocks unlimited fish IDs and compliance checks.
How do I delete my data?
Open the app โ Settings โ Delete my data. This clears your on-device catch history and settings. Gillscan stores no account data on our servers โ there is nothing to delete server-side. See our Privacy Policy.
The identification was wrong โ what now?
AI identification isn't perfect, especially for similar-looking species or partial/blurry photos. Re-shoot the whole fish in good light, or email us the photo at hello@gillscan.com so we can improve.
Report a bug or request a region/species
Email hello@gillscan.com with your device, app version (Settings โ About), and what happened. Region and species requests are welcome.
